How to take measurements of your windows ?
The approach for taking measurements of your windows depends on the dressing you want. The schemas will help you to have the right dimensions before you visit our shop.
Project to make curtains and draps
If you already have a rail / curtain rod placed
- WIDTH = the measurement of your curtain rod without the nozzles
- HEIGHT = the measurement between the underside of the curtain rod and the floor ( or the window sill)
If you do not have a rail or curtain rod
- WIDTH = the measurement of your window and add 30 cm
- HEIGHT = the measurement between the upper limit of your window and and the floor ( or the window sill) and add 15 cm
Project to make blinds
A folded blind will have a minimum height of 28 cm. Make sure it will not block the opening of your window once placed.
- WIDTH = the measurement of your window and add 5cm (to be able to move it with 2,50cm on each side)
- HEIGHT = the measurement between the upper limit and botton of your window and add 30 cm (necessary to fold the blind)

In this case you will need the right amount of fabric. Here is how to have the right amout of meters:
Formula to make a curtain / drapes
1. To have to right amount of plain fabric
- For the width :
Multiply by 2 the finished width of your window ( to have a nice depth). Divide this measurement by the width of the chosen fabric and you will get the number of strips needed.
- For the height :
Add 30cm to your measurement to make the hem.
- For the final measurement:
Multiply the height with the number of strips.
EXAMPLE :
“The width of my curtain rod/rail mesures 1,80m and the finished height of my curtain mesures 2,80m. I chose a plain fabric that has a width of 1,40m, to make my curtain.“
Width = 1,80m. X 2 = 3,60m
> 3,60m. divided by 1,40m. = 3
Height = 2,80m + 30cm = 3,10m.
Measurement = 3X3,10m = 9,30m. fabric
This means you will need 9,30m. fabric to make your beautiful curtains !
2. To have to right amount of printed fabric
- For the width :
Multiply by 2 the finished width of your window ( to have a nice depth). Divide this measurement by the width of the chosen fabric and you will get the number of strips needed.
- For the height :
Add 30cm to your measurement to make the hem. Divide this measurement by the match of your fabric. You get a number: take the decimal above and multiply this number by the match.
EXAMPLE :
“The width of the curtain rod/rail mesures 1,80m and the finished height of my curtain mesures 2,80m. I chose a fabric with prints and a width of 1,40m to make my curtain. The match is 36cm.”
Width = 1,80m X 2 = 3,60m
> 3,60m divided by 1,40m = 3
Heigth = 280cm + 30cm = 310cm
> 310cm divided by 36 (match) = 8,6 so 9 (upper decimal)
> 9 X 36 = 3,24 m
Measurement = 3 X 3,24m = 9,72 m of fabric (we round up to 9,75)
This means you will need 9,75 m of fabric to make your beautiful curtains ! Don’t hesitate to ask us for a calculation if you want to buy fabric on our online store.
Formula to make blinds
- For the width :
Add 10cm to the finished width to make the hem.
- For the the height:
Add 60cm to your measurement to put the sticks through.
EXAMPLE :
“The width of my blind measures 1,30m and the finished height is 1,30m. I chose a fabric with prints and a width of 1,40m.”
Width = 1,30m + 10cm = 1,40m
Height = 1,30m + 60cm = 1,90m
Measurement = This means I have enough width if we add 10cm because I chose a fabric with a width of 1,40m. I chose the quantity depending of the height I needed. This means 1,90m of fabric.
You need 1,90m of fabric to make your blind ! Don’t hesitate to ask us for a calculation if you want to buy fabric on our online store.
